What Are Shaker Cards?

A shaker card is an interactive card with a clear window through which you can see embellishments like sequins, glitters,  beads, and other small items. These small decorative items are enclosed in a “pouch” sandwich between your card front and card base. They can freely move around when you shake them, which is why some shaker cards can produce sounds depending on the materials grouped together.

The windows are usually achieved with acetate, vellum, or clear plastic and can be made into different shapes, such as circle windows or square ones. They are a popular technique in paper crafting and can be used for making handmade cards for various occasions, from birthdays and weddings to holidays and special events.

Shaker cards aim to create a fun and exciting element for your card designs, and it’s easy to make, even for beginners! So if you want to go beyond the traditional flat cards, then get some tape and your favorite tiny embellishments, and start making wow-worthy cards that feature dimension, texture, and interest!

What Supplies Do I Need to Make Shaker Cards?

To start making your own shaker cards, you’ll need the following materials:

  1. Cardstock: This is the base material for your card, and it comes in various colors and textures. Choose a cardstock that is sturdy enough to hold the weight of your shaker elements, such as 110lb cardstock.
  2. Window material: You will need a clear material for your window, such as acetate or clear plastic sheets.
  3. Shaker elements: These are the small objects that will fill the window of your shaker card and move around when the card is shaken. Sequins, beads, confetti, and glitter are one of the more popular shaker elements.
  4. Foam tape: This is used to create a raised border around the window of your shaker card, which will hold the shaker elements in place.
  5. Scissors or paper cutter: You will need these to cut your cardstock and window material to the desired size and shape.
  6. Adhesive: You will need a strong adhesive to hold your layers in place and to attach the window material to the cardstock.
  7. Stamps, ink, or other embellishments: You can choose to add additional decorative elements to your shaker card, such as stamped images, stickers, or die-cut shapes, to give it even more pizzazz!
  8. Optional materials: Optional supplies include a die cutting machine, which can be used to easily create custom shapes and cut-outs for your shaker cards. You can also choose to add embossing ink, powder, and a heat gun to your list of supplies, which can be used to emboss stamped images and add a raised texture to your cardstock.

How to Make Your Own Shaker Card at Home

Once you have your supplies ready, you’re all set to start making your own shaker cards! Simply do this step-by-step guide, and you’ll be on your way to making stunning shaker cards for your family and friends:

  1. Cut your cardstock to the desired size and fold it in half to create your card base.
  2. Cut a piece of window material to fit over the area where you want the shaker elements to be. This should be slightly smaller than the size of your card front.
  3. Create a frame around the window area using foam tape.
  4. Then, cut the foam tape into small pieces and stick them around the edges of the window, leaving a small gap between each piece. Make sure the foam tape is even and that there are no gaps between the pieces.
  5. Add your shaker elements inside the frame. You can use as many or as few as you like, but be careful not to overfill the frame, as this can cause the elements to get stuck. You need to leave space for the pieces to move around.
  6.  Place the window material over the foam tape frame and press down firmly to seal it in place.
  7. Lastly, decorate the front of your card with stamps, ink, or other embellishments as desired. Shake your card and enjoy the fun!

Other Tips and Tricks to Making Shaker Cards

Experiment With Multiple Windows

Who said that you can only make one big window for your shaker card? Try playing around with the number of your windows, and try combining different shapes as well. You can make three small circular windows, or have an alternating star-shaped window. The possibilities are endless!

Use Complementary Colors

When choosing your shaker elements, consider using colors and shapes that match the theme of your card. Having a color-coordinated card would be much more pleasing to the eyes, and help ensure the harmony of your card’s elements. For example, if you are making a beach-themed card, try using embellishments in the shape of stars, shells, and other items that can be associated with the beach.

Practice Layering on Small Projects First

If you’re a beginner, try practicing layering on a small scale before making a full-sized card to get a feel for how much foam tape and what shaker elements to use. It can also take some time to get the appropriate sandwich, so try figuring out where to cut and adhere to get the results that you want ahead of time.
